[Termes IGN] système de gestion de bases de données orientées objetRésumé : (auteur) This paper proposes a semantic geographical data model. Localization of geographical entities is defined using an abstract data type. The geographical entities’ semantic is expressed through high level concepts in an entity-relationship model extended by both inheritance and propagation mechanisms. The system’s implementation is described. It takes advantage of the object-oriented aspect of the O2 DBMS, and in particular of the inheritance mechanism. Three different data structures allow to implement geographical entities’ localization. They correspond to the topology description levels described in modern exchange formats. A principle of independence between data structures and operations is defined. This principle allows avoiding the re-questioning of the definition of a process if the data structure must be modified. Lastly the described system has been effectively developed and is used with sets of a large volume of real data produced by the French Institut Géographique National (IGN). [Termes IGN] parcoursRésumé : (auteur) This paper addresses a number of conceptual and practical problems of integrating space and time within a GIS environment encountered in an ongoing study of the strategies adopted by a shepherd in managing a flock of sheep at different scales of space and time on an alpine pasture in the southern French Alps. The aim of the study, which is based on the analysis of the timetables used to exploit the vegetatative resource within a set of time-space constraints, is to understand the way that the shepherd partitions space into compartments and the way these are used at different times. The pertinent conceptual issues are reviewed, the problems of formalising this type of problem for analysis are discussed, and alternative ways of structuring the data for GIS application are proposed. By way of conclusion, a preliminary attempt is made to summarise critical issues emerging from the study in the handling of time in spatial analysis and comments are briefly made on directions for future spatio-temoral research into grazing strategies. [Termes IGN] topologieRésumé : (éditeur) Spatial database management has become an important subarea of current database research. Research in this area is often characterized by interdisciplinary cooperation: computer scientists work with geographers andenvironmental scientists to provide better access to spatial databases of steadily increasing size. After the First Symposium on Large Spatial Databases (SSD '89) was held in Santa Barbara, California, in 1989 (and its proceedings published as Volume 409 of this series), a second symposium (SSD'91) was held in Zurich, Switzerland. This proceedings volume contains the papers presented at SSD '91. Topics include spatial data models and access methods, performance studies, geometric algorithms, spatial query languages and user interfaces, geographic information systems, and object-oriented techniques.
