[Termes IGN] formationRésumé : (auteur) Geographical data and analyses are a useful asset in several domains of education and research including geography, history, urbanism or environmental science, amongst others, from primary school to higher education and life-long learning. In the specific context of Europe, as more and more data (including geographic data) becomes open for all, it is crucial to ensure these users have the capacity to make the most of the wealth of this data.
Reciprocally, from the perspective of data providers, education and research are particularly important application domains. They have the ability to link knowledge (production or dissemination) with data and adopt critical perspectives on this data.
In this context, a half-day workshop was organised by EuroSDR during the 2022 conference of the Association of Geographical Information Laboratories in Europe (AGILE). It focussed on current experiences developed by EuroSDR members, mainly at national mapping agencies, as well as proposals stemming from AGILE research communities, to share experiences and visions on this topic. It also targeted possible synergies to interconnect existing approaches, usually national, and achieve crossnational solutions, in Europe and beyond.Numéro de notice : 17756 Affiliation des auteurs : IGN+Ext (2020- ) Thématique : GEOMATIQUE Nature : Actes DOI : sans En ligne : http://www.eurosdr.net/sites/default/files/uploaded_files/ws-report_geodatatools [...] Format de la ressource électronique : URL Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=103187 A GIS-based model for automated land suitability assessment for main crops in north-western desert of Egypt (case study: south of Al-Dabaa Corridor) / Adel Shalaby in Applied geomatics, vol 15 n° 1 (March 2023)

[Termes IGN] utilisation du solRésumé : (auteur) The ever-increasing population causes huge pressure on the areas already inhabited and causes a decrease in an area per capita. This fact necessitates an essential demand for evaluating and classifying the soil according to its agricultural productivity for different crops. This research aimed to evaluate lands which proposed to use in the agricultural field in the south of Al-Dabaa Corridor based on remote sensed data and GIS techniques. Moreover, the future optimum agricultural use planning will be projected based on the land assessments in the study area. Land suitability was evaluated using ALES-arid software for six crops. It was found that 74% of the study area was suitable for one fruit crop, date palm, and about 77.3% for one crop, alfalfa, and also suitable for one vegetable crop, tomato, by 77.1%. Furthermore, it was found that the study area was moderately suitable for other two crops, faba bean and maize (72.7 and 67.8%), and one fruit crop, citrus (70.1%). On the other hand, it was found that the characteristics that most affected the suitability class of fruit crops were soil salinity, soil depth, ESP, slope, and coarse texture. Finally, the study area should go under major reclamation process (removal of the excess salts and improvement of the drainage conditions) in order to obtain the highest production. [Vedettes matières IGN] GéovisualisationRésumé : (auteur) Humans increasingly rely on GPS-enabled mobile maps to navigate novel environments. However, this reliance can negatively affect spatial learning, which can be detrimental even for expert navigators such as search and rescue personnel. Landmark visualization has been shown to improve spatial learning in general populations by facilitating object identification between the map and the environment. How landmark visualization supports expert users’ spatial learning during map-assisted navigation is still an open research question. We thus conducted a real-world study with wayfinding experts in an unknown residential neighborhood. We aimed to assess how two different landmark visualization styles (abstract 2D vs. realistic 3D buildings) would affect experts’ spatial learning in a map-assisted navigation task during an emergency scenario. Using a between-subjects design, we asked Swiss military personnel to follow a given route using a mobile map, and to identify five task-relevant landmarks along the route. We recorded experts’ gaze behavior while navigating and examined their spatial learning after the navigation task. We found that experts’ spatial learning improved when they focused their visual attention on the environment, but the direction of attention between the map and the environment was not affected by the landmark visualization style. Further, there was no difference in spatial learning between the 2D and 3D groups. Contrary to previous research with general populations, this study suggests that the landmark visualization style does not enhance expert navigators’ navigation or spatial learning abilities, thus highlighting the need for population-specific mobile map design solutions. [Vedettes matières IGN] CartologieRésumé : (auteur) Dark maps, which are also called dark modes or dark themes, have gained popularity, but their usability has not been experimentally evaluated. This article presents a user experiment that uses eye-tracking to assess the usability of dark and light maps. Here, two widely used web maps, Google Maps and Gaode Maps, are selected at the street and city scales. Eight map-use tasks are designed and cover four operations (identify, compare, rank, and associate) with space-alone and attributes-in-space distinctions. Four pairs of map-use tasks (light-during-the-day, dark-during-the-day, dark-at-night, and light-at-night) are examined from three aspects: effectiveness, efficiency, and cognitive load. The results provide preliminary evidence that the light-during-the-day performance is generally the best in most cases, followed by the dark-at-night performance; the dark-during-the-day performance is the worst in all cases, followed by the light-at-night performance, which suggests that aligning the map design with the environment (i.e., lighting environment) is critical for better communication. The light-during-the-day performance is the best for space-alone tasks, and the dark-at-night performance is the best for attributes-in-space tasks. Our investigation also indicates that dark maps are far less favored in practice, which suggests that users' preference for using the dark mode of public-facing web maps needs to be shaped. Since light and dark maps are associated with photopic and scotopic vision, respectively, the results indicate the need for future studies on how to leverage scotopic vision to design better dark maps. [Termes IGN] organisme cartographique nationalRésumé : (auteur) Digital Twins are realistic digital representation of physical objects and are differentiated from traditional models by the live connection between the digital and the physical worlds, often enabled by sensors. They provide insights into the physical world for decision makers, for example via simulation, and can be used to directly alter the physical world without manual intervention. While they have their origins in manufacturing, they are increasingly being used within the built environment, by both public and private sectors. Increasingly city-wide and National Digital Twins are also being considered, to underpin local, municipal and central government decision making. For these emerging Digital Twins, location data such as that provided by National Mapping and Cadastral Agencies (NMCAs) has the potential to underpin Digital Twin modelling. It thus becomes important for NMCAs to better understand Digital Twins in order to determine whether current data offerings can meet this new demand and how best to support the various activities. As a first stage investigation under the auspices of EuroSDR, this paper explores challenges and opportunities for NMCAs and others working in the location sector, presenting the result of an international survey and workshop on these topics. We conclude that there is significant overlap with existing challenges within the geospatial community and those required to better support Digital Twins - e.g. interoperability and data management and governance. Additionally, the opportunity for a broader understanding and uptake of location data offered by Digital Twins should not be ignored.
