[Termes IGN] SURF (algorithme)Résumé : (auteur) Vision based localization is widely investigated for the autonomous navigation and robotics. One of the basic steps of vision based localization is the extraction of interest points in images that are captured by the embedded camera. In this paper, SIFT and SURF extractors were chosen to evaluate their performance in localization. Four street view image sequences captured by a mobile mapping system, were used for the evaluation and both SIFT and SURF were tested on different image scales. Besides, the impact of the interest point distribution was also studied. We evaluated the performances from for aspects: repeatability, precision, accuracy and runtime. The local bundle adjustment method was applied to refine the pose parameters and the 3D coordinates of tie points. According to the results of our experiments, SIFT was more reliable than SURF. Apart from this, both the accuracy and the efficiency of localization can be improved if the distribution of feature points are well constrained for SIFT. [Termes IGN] SurinameRésumé : (auteur) Included in the larger Guiana Shield ecosystem, Suriname, Guyana, French Guiana and the Brazilian state of Amapá possess one of the largest continuous tracts of pristine forest in the world. Under little threat until fifteen years ago, deforestation and forest degradation are of increasing concern in the region. Gold mining activities driven by the sustained increase of gold price has experienced a significant boom and represents nowadays one of the main driver. The pollution of rivers and streams by mercury used in small-scale gold mining is also expanding, which increases risks to local population health and freshwater biodiversity. In 2010, the French National Forest Office (ONF) showed by using optical satellite images at medium and high resolution (HR) that gold mining activities’ impacts on forest cover and freshwater increased approximately by a factor three in the region between 2001 and 2008. More recently, Alvarez-Berríos et al. (2015) pointed out a sustained acceleration of deforestation caused by gold mining in the Guiana shield between 2007 and 2013. However, this study which was performed using low resolution data at the scale of South America has limited capacity to detect gold mining, especially in the high forest cover of Guiana Shield where small- and medium-scale operations account for most of the deforestation. To overcome this limitation, the REDD+ for the Guiana Shield project conducted a study co-funded by WWF Guianas to update for 2014 the ONF 2001-2008 results, using optical multi-sensors data at medium and high resolution. The study was carried out following a unique collaborative and participatory approach involving a team of experts from the forestry and environmental services of each territory, namely SEMA (Amapá-Brazil), ONF (French Guiana-France), GFC (Guyana), and SBB (Suriname). The results confirmed the rapid expansion of the activity in the region where more than 92,000 ha were newly deforested between 2008 and 2014, compared to approximately 46,000 ha during the period 2001-2008. In 2014, more than 9,000 km of waterways were in direct contact with mining sites, which is approximately 6.5 times more than in 2001. Although a reliable, accurate and robust regional methodology has been developed and operationally implemented, the frequent and widespread cloud cover of the Guianan moist forest region represents a challenge for the use of optical HR data. The need to process time series of satellite images in most areas to reduce cloud cover is time-consuming. Despite processing more than two hundreds images, 3.6% of the study area remained masked by clouds. The recent free access to SAR HR Sentinel-1 data offers great opportunities to improve the process. SAR sensors can peer through clouds and their sensitivity to soil moisture can help to better detect small-scale mining sites. Therefore, the REDD+ for the Guiana Shield project has started to build capacities in the region on SAR image interpretation and processing using the Sentinel Application Platform (SNAP). A first mosaic of Sentinel-1 data covering Suriname, Guyana, French Guiana and the Brazilian state of Amapá has been created and automated pre-processing steps have been developed. The integration of Sentinel-1 data in the regional gold mining monitoring system has been successfully tested in four study sites, one in each country. The coming free access to optical HR Sentinel-2 data opens even more perspectives towards the development of cost-effective monitoring systems in the region, especially valuable in the context of REDD+. This paper first presents the results of the impact of gold mining activities on the forest cover and freshwater for 2014 and shows the evolution since 2001. Secondly, it provides the first outcomes towards the development of time- and cost-efficient forest monitoring systems in the region. [Termes IGN] zone urbaineRésumé : (auteur) Precise localization in dense urban areas is a challenging task for both mobile mapping and driver assistance systems. This paper proposes a strategy to use road markings as localization landmarks for vision based systems. First step consists in reconstructing a map of road marks. A mobile mapping system equipped with precise georeferencing devices is applied to scan the scene in 3D and to generate an ortho-image of the road surface. A RJMCMC sampler that is coupled with a simulated annealing method is applied to detect occurrences of road marking templates instanced from an extensible database of road mark patterns. The detected objects are reconstructed in 3D using the height information obtained from 3D points. A calibrated camera and a low cost GPS receiver are embedded on a vehicle and used as localization devices. Local bundle adjustment (LBA) is applied to estimate the trajectory of the vehicle. In order to reduce the drift of the trajectory, images are matched with the reconstructed road marks frequently. The matching is initialized by the initial poses that are estimated by LBA and optimized by a MCMC algorithm. The matching provides ground control points that are integrated in the LBA in order to refine the pose parameters. The method is evaluated on a set of images acquired in a real urban area and is compared with a precise ground-truth. [Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (auteur) Producing maps and geo-data at different scales is traditionally one of the main tasks of National (and regional) Mapping Agencies (NMAs). The derivation of low-scale maps (i.e. with less detail) from large-scale maps (with more detail), i.e. generalisation, used to be a manual task of cartographers. With the need for more up-to-date data as well as the development of automated generalisation solutions in both research and industry, NMAs are implementing automated generalisation production lines. To exchange experiences and identify remaining issues, a workshop was organised end 2015 by the Commission on Generalisation and Multirepresentation of the International Cartographic Association and the Commission on Modelling and Processing of the European Spatial Data Research. This paper reports about the workshop outcomes. It shows that, most NMAs have implemented a certain form of automation in their workflows, varying from generalisation of certain features while still maintaining a manual workflow; semiautomated editing and generalisation to a fully automated procedure. [Termes IGN] organisme cartographique nationalRésumé : (auteur) Techniques for 3D mapping are maturing. At the same time the need for 3D data is increasing. This has pushed national (and regional) mapping agencies (NMAs) to consider extending their traditional task of providing topographic data into the third dimension. To show how research results in 3D mapping obtained over the past twenty years have been adopted by practice, this paper presents the ongoing work on 3D mapping within seven NMAs, all member of the 3D Special Interest Group of European Spatial Data Research (EuroSDR). The paper shows that some NMAs are still in the initial (experimental) phase of 3D mapping, while others have already built solid databases to maintain 2.5D and 3D topographic data covering their whole country.
