[Vedettes matières IGN] Ecologie forestièreRésumé : (auteur) Context : There are differences among Member States as regards applying conservation status assessment and priorities according to the Directive on the conservation of natural habitats (Habitats Directive).
Aims : This paper aims to analyse the consistency as regards forest habitat types reporting and the use and suitability of National Forest Inventories (NFIs) to assess their conservation status, as well as to provide recommendations for harmonised assessments through NFIs.
Methods : A survey was carried out concerning the use of NFI data to report within the commitments of the Habitat Directive. The survey covered 13 European countries, accounting for 62% of forest habitat area. Additionally, case studies were carried out in four countries.
Results : The identification of forest habitat types and the set of quantitative and/or qualitative indicators differ between countries. The use of NFI data is being considered in seven countries and it is expected to increase for the 2013–2018 reporting period. The main challenges reported of use of NFI data are related to the habitat identification and their mapping, and the monitoring frequency, design and costs (i.e. rare or small area habitats).

[Vedettes matières IGN] Végétation et changement climatiqueRésumé : (auteur) This study presents a novel histologic approach to quantify the intra-annual dynamics of carbon sequestration in forming wood. This innovative approach, based on repeated measurements of xylem apparent density, is more direct, and more accurate than the previously published cellular-based approach. Moreover, this new approach, which was tested here on softwoods, is also applicable to hardwoods without any modification.
Context : Forest ecosystems are key players of the terrestrial carbon cycle. Indeed, wood represents the principal carbon pool of terrestrial biomass, accumulated in trees through cambial activity.
Aims : Here, we present a novel, simple, and fast approach to accurately estimate the intra-annual dynamics of aboveground woody biomass production based on image analysis of forming xylem sections.
Methods : During the 2015 growing season, we weekly collected wood samples (microcores) containing the forming xylem on seven Norway spruces (Picea abies (L.) Karst), grown in Hesse forest (North-East France). The microcores were prepared to allow the observation of the forming tissues with an optical microscope. Xylem apparent density and radial increment were then measured directly on images of the histological sections. In order to compare our “histologic approach” with the previously published “cellular approach,” we also counted the number of tracheids in each differentiation zones, and measured the tracheid dimensions all along the last-formed tree ring.
Results : The two approaches yielded comparable meaningful results, describing xylem size increase and aboveground woody biomass production as bell-shaped curves culminating in May and June respectively. However, the histologic approach provided a shorter time lag between xylem size increase and biomass production than the cellular one.
Conclusion : Better quantification of the shift between stem growth in size and in biomass will require addressing the knowledge gap regarding lignin deposition kinetics. [Termes IGN] série temporelleRésumé : (auteur) Coastal populations are impacted by relative sea level variations, which consist both of absolute sea level variations and of vertical land motions. This paper focuses on the Southwest and Central Pacific region, a recognized vulnerable region to sea level rise and where a large range of vertical land motion dynamics is observed. We analyse vertical displacement rates obtained from Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) by different analysis centres. We study the role played by modelled parameters, such as step discontinuities (due to equipment changes, earthquakes, etc.), in the position time-series analysis. We propose a new modelling approach based on a joint inversion of GNSS position time-series from different analysis centres. The final uncertainty on the vertical land motion rates is estimated as a combination of the uncertainty due to the GNSS data processing itself and the uncertainty due to the stability of the reference frame in which the GNSS data are expressed. We find that the dominant trend in the Southwest and Central Pacific is a moderate subsidence, with an average rate of −1.1 mm yr–1, but significant variations are observed, with displacement rates varying from an uplift of 1.6 ± 0.3 mm yr–1 to a subsidence of −5.4 ± 0.3 mm yr–1. Taking into account the geodynamic context, we assess, for each station, the relevance of current estimates of linear vertical displacement rate and uncertainty for forecasting future coastal sea levels. [Termes IGN] teneur intégrée en vapeur d'eauRésumé : (auteur) This work uses a network of GPS stations over Europe from which a homogenized integrated water vapor (IWV) dataset has been retrieved, completed with colocated temperature and precipitation measurements over specific stations to (i) estimate the biases of six regional climate models over Europe in terms of humidity; (ii) understand their origins; and (iii) finally assess the impact of these biases on the frequency of occurrence of precipitation. The evaluated simulations have been performed in the framework of HYMEX/Med-CORDEX programs and cover the Mediterranean area and part of Europe at horizontal resolutions of 50 to 12 km.
The analysis shows that models tend to overestimate the low values of IWV and the use of the nudging technique reduces the differences between GPS and simulated IWV. Results suggest that physics of models mostly explain the mean biases, while dynamics affects the variability. The land surface–atmosphere exchanges affect the estimation of IWV over most part of Europe, especially in summer. The limitations of the models to represent these processes explain part of their biases in IWV. However, models correctly simulate the dependance between IWV and temperature, and specifically the deviation that this relationship experiences regarding the Clausius–Clapeyron law after a critical value of temperature (Tbreak). The high spatial variability of Tbreak indicates that it has a strong dependence on local processes which drive the local humidity sources. This explains why the maximum values of IWV are not necessarily observed over warmer areas, which are often dry areas.
Finally, it is shown over the SIRTA observatory (near Paris) that the frequency of occurrence of light precipitation is strongly conditioned by the biases in IWV and by the precision of the models to reproduce the distribution of IWV as a function of the temperature. The results of the models indicate that a similar dependence occurs in other areas of Europe, especially where precipitation has a predominantly convective character. According to the observations, for each range of temperature, there is a critical value of IWV from which precipitation starts to increase. The critical values and the probability of exceeding them are simulated with a bias that depends on the model.
