Indeed, instead of using state-of-the-art Earth’s gravitational field models to predict frequency shifts between distant clocks, they could permit to determine geopotential differences directly at a centimeter-level accuracy. In our previous work (Lion et al., 2017) dealing with the geopotential determination at high spatial resolution in mountainous regions (e.g. the Massif Central – France), we have pointed out that clock-based geodetic observable can provide useful information at spatial scales beyond what is available from satellites and they could be used to fill areas not covered by the gravity data on the ground. Our synthetic simulations have shown that adding few clock-based potential data to a gravimetric data set can significantly improve the quality of reconstruction of the geopotential. Therefore, it turns out there is a large variety of possible clock distribution allowing to reduce the reconstruction residuals (bias and standard deviation), with different locations and number of clocks. In this work, we have investigated ways to optimize clock locations from a gravimetric data set in the Massif Central region in order to know where to put them to minimize the residuals and improve further the determination of the geopotential. To do that, we have used a multi-objective genetic algorithm (GA). A GA is an evolutionary algorithm inspired by the idea of natural evolution. Starting from a random initial population, with different clock distributions, the algorithm selects clock locations with good chances of reproduction and reproduces the new generation of clock locations using operations such as crossover and mutation. The process depends on some objectives we want to reach in order to solve the optimization problem, and it is repeated several times for a given number of generations or until a solution considered as optimum is found. We show how GA can help to provide optimal solutions for a problem with a fixed and variable number of clock locations. We discuss the effect of different parameters, such as the way to define the objectives and the constrains of the problem, the effect of the coverage and the quality of the gravimetric data and possible applications. [Termes IGN] water vapour radiometerRésumé : (Auteur) The estimation of the precipitable water vapour content (W) with high temporal and spatial resolution is of great interest to both meteorological and climatological studies. Several methodologies based on remote sensing techniques have been recently developed in order to obtain accurate and frequent measurements of this atmospheric parameter. Among them, the relative low cost and easy deployment of sun–sky radiometers, or sun photometers, operating in several international networks, allowed the development of automatic estimations of W from these instruments with high temporal resolution. However, the great problem of this methodology is the estimation of the sun-photometric calibration parameters. The objective of this paper is to validate a new methodology based on the hypothesis that the calibration parameters characterizing the atmospheric transmittance at 940 nm are dependent on vertical profiles of temperature, air pressure and moisture typical of each measurement site. To obtain the calibration parameters some simultaneously seasonal measurements of W, from independent sources, taken over a large range of solar zenith angle and covering a wide range of W, are needed. In this work yearly GNSS/GPS datasets were used for obtaining a table of photometric calibration constants and the methodology was applied and validated in three European ESR-SKYNET network sites, characterized by different atmospheric and climatic conditions: Rome, Valencia and Aosta. Results were validated against the GNSS/GPS and AErosol RObotic NET-work (AERONET) W estimations. In both the validations the agreement was very high, with a percentage RMSD of about 6, 13 and 8 % in the case of GPS intercomparison at Rome, Aosta and Valencia, respectively, and of 8 % in the case of AERONET comparison in Valencia. Analysing the results by W classes, the present methodology was found to clearly improve W estimation at low W content when compared against AERONET in terms of % bias, bringing the agreement with the GPS (considered the reference one) from a % bias of 5.76 to 0.52. [Termes IGN] Global Geodetic Observing SystemRésumé : (auteur) The Standing Committee on Performance Simulations and Architectural Trade-Offs (PLATO) was established by the Bureau of Networks and Observations of the Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS) in order to support – by prior performance analysis – activities to reach the GGOS requirements for the accuracy and stability of the terrestrial reference frame. Based on available data sets and simulated observations for further stations and satellite missions the committee studies the impact of technique-specific improvements, new stations, and additional co-locations in space on reference frame products. Simulation studies carried out so far show the importance of the individual station performance and additional stations for satellite laser ranging, the perspectives for lunar laser ranging assuming additional stations and reflectors, and the significant impact of the new VGOS antennas. Significant progress is achieved in processing VLBI satellite tracking data. New insights in technique-specific error sources were derived based on real data from short baselines. Regarding co-location in space PLATO members confirmed that E-GRASP could fulfill the GGOS requirements with reaching a geocenter and scale accuracy and stability of 1 mm and 0.1 mm/year, respectively. We identify earthquake-related gravity signals by searching for transient variations near the time of the earthquake in GRACE-reconstructed time series of gravity gradients at different spatial scales. The gravity gradients are expressed in spherical frames rotated along the radial axis in order to enhance gravity variations according to different orientations. Applied to different sets of gravity field models, our analysis allows us to evidence anomalous gravity signals starting a few months before the rupture across the regional subduction system, which cannot be explained by mass redistributions from water cycle sources around Japan nor by GRACE striping. After the rupture, the gravity variations propagate far within the Pacific and the Philippine Sea plates interiors.We further test the presence of the pre-seismic signals by also applying a statistical analysis of the gravity gradient time series, without knowledge on the consecutive rupture. Our findings show that satellite gravity brings unique information to monitor major plate boundaries, which could be used in seismic hazard assessment.
