[Termes IGN] système de référence géodésiqueRésumé : (auteur) Our planet Earth is constantly deforming under the effects of geophysical processes that cause linear and nonlinear displacements of the geodetic stations upon which the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF) is established. The ITRF has traditionally been defined as a secular (linear) frame in which station coordinates are described by piecewise linear functions of time. Nowadays, some particularly demanding applications however require more elaborate reference frame representations that can accommodate non-linear displacements of the reference stations. Two such types of reference frame representations are reviewed: the usual linear frame enhanced with additional parametric functions such as seasonal sine waves, and non-parametric time series of quasi-instantaneous reference frames. After introducing those two reference frame representations, we briefly review the systematic errors present in geodetic station position time series. We finally discuss the practical issues raised by the existence of these systematic errors for the implementation of both types of non-linear reference frames. [Termes IGN] horloge atomiqueRésumé : (auteur) ROYMAGE (hoRloge Optique à Ytterbium Mobile Appliquée à l’exploration GEodésique) is a project funded by the French ANR dedicated to develop a transportable ytterbium (Yb) optical lattice clock. Connected to the fiber network REFIMEVE+, the clock will allow remote clock comparisons to perform chronometric geodesy applications and tests of gravitational time dilation. With a relative frequency uncertainty targeted in the low 10^-17 (equiv. 10 cm in height) at a first step, the clock will provide geopotential measurements which are not directly available with traditional techniques (e.g. GNSS/levelling, InSar, gravimetry, gradiometry). This could revolutionize the determination of the gravity field and geodetic vertical references, the exploration of the Earth’s internal dynamic and the connection between sea level measured either by tide gauges or by satellites. We present here the objectives and motivations for the 4-years project involving 4 partners in the consortium (Observatoire de Paris, IPGP, IGN and SHOM). [Termes IGN] surcharge hydrologiqueRésumé : (auteur) The continuous redistribution of water mass involved in the hydrologic cycle leads to deformation of the solid Earth. On a global scale, this deformation is well explained by redistribution in surface loading and can be quantified to first order with space-based gravimetric and geodetic measurements. At the regional scale, however, aquifer systems also undergo poroelastic deformation in response to groundwater fluctuations. Disentangling these related but distinct 3D deformation fields from geodetic time series is essential to accurately invert for changes in continental water mass, to understand the mechanical response of aquifers to internal pressure changes as well as to correct time series for these known effects. Here, we demonstrate a methodology to accomplish this task by considering the example of the well-instrumented Ozark Plateaus Aquifer System (OPAS) in central United States. We begin by characterizing the most important sources of signal in the spatially heterogeneous groundwater level dataset using an Independent Component Analysis. Then, to estimate the associated poroelastic displacements, we project geodetic time series corrected for surface loading effects onto orthogonalized versions of the groundwater temporal functions. We interpret the extracted displacements in light of analytical solutions and a 2D model relating groundwater level variations to surface displacements. In particular, the relatively low estimates of elastic moduli inferred from the poroelastic displacements and groundwater fluctuations may be indicative of surficial layers with a high fracture density. Our findings suggest that OPAS undergoes significant poroelastic deformation, including highly heterogeneous horizontal poroelastic displacements.
