[Termes IGN] vitesseRésumé : (auteur) Understanding and modelling the properties of the stochastic variations in geodetic time series is crucial to obtain realistic uncertainties for deterministic parameters, e.g., long-term velocities, and helpful in characterizing non-modelled processes. With the increasing span of geodetic time series, it is expected that additional observations would help better understand the low-frequency properties of these stochastic variations. In the meantime, recent studies evidenced that the choice of the functional model for the time series biases the assessment of these low-frequency stochastic properties. In particular, frequent offsets in position time series can hinder the evaluation of the noise level at low frequencies and prevent the detection of possible random-walk-type variability. This study investigates the ability of the Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) method to correctly retrieve low-frequency stochastic properties of geodetic time series in the presence of frequent offsets. We show that part of the influence of offsets reported by previous studies results from the MLE method estimation biases. These biases occur even when all offset epochs are correctly identified and accounted for in the trajectory model. They can cause a dramatic underestimation of deterministic parameter uncertainties. We show that one can avoid biases using the Restricted Maximum Likelihood Estimation (RMLE) method. Yet, even when using the RMLE method or equivalent, adding offsets to the trajectory model inevitably blurs the estimated low-frequency properties of geodetic time series by increasing low-frequency stochastic parameter uncertainties more than other stochastic parameters. [Termes IGN] texturageRésumé : (auteur) Iconographic image collections are a cultural heritage that could reach a larger audience by proposing their immersive presentation in a 3D web application. Proposing a historical street view application, based on these historical images, raises issues such as the unavailability of historical 3D models of the scene and the heterogeneity and sparsity of these photographs. We propose to use the 3D city and terrain models of the current scene, as well as a 3D point cloud if available, to simultaneously reproject and blend many historical images using an image-based rendering approach. Our contributions raise significantly the number of projective textures blended per rendering pass (typically from 8 to 40) on triangular meshes (of the 3D city and terrain models) and on point clouds. As a first step to tackle diachrony artifacts, we also propose a simple point cloud classification to filter in the shader the points corresponding to building or terrain details from the points corresponding to transient objects. However, semantic segmentation algorithms for urban mesh have been little investigated and do not exploit all radiometric information. To address this problem, we adopt an approach consisting in sampling a point cloud from the textured mesh, then using a point cloud semantic segmentation algorithm on this cloud, and finally using the obtained semantic to segment the initial mesh. In this paper, we study the influence of different parameters such as the sampling method, the density of the extracted cloud, the features selected (color, normal, elevation) as well as the number of points used at each training period. Our result outperforms the state-of-the-art on the SUM dataset, earning about 4 points in OA and 18 points in mIoU. Also nowadays, the volume of growing stock (GS) is considered one of the most important forest attributes monitored by National Forest Inventories (NFIs) to inform policy decisions and forest management planning. The origins of forest inventories closely relate to times of early wood shortage in Europe causing the need to explore and plan the utilisation of GS in the catchment areas of mines, saltworks and settlements. Over time, forest surveys became more detailed and their scope turned to larger areas, although they were still conceived as stand-wise inventories. In the 1920s, the first sample-based NFIs were introduced in the northern European countries. Since the earliest beginnings, GS monitoring approaches have considerably evolved. Current NFI methods differ due to country-specific conditions, inventory traditions, and information needs. Consequently, GS estimates were lacking international comparability and were therefore subject to recent harmonisation efforts to meet the increasing demand for consistent forest resource information at European level. As primary large-area monitoring programmes in most European countries, NFIs assess a multitude of variables, describing various aspects of sustainable forest management, including for example wood supply, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity. Many of these contemporary subject matters involve considerations about GS and its changes, at different geographic levels and time frames from past to future developments according to scenario simulations. Due to its historical, continued and currently increasing importance, we provide an up-to-date review focussing on large-area GS monitoring where we i) describe the origins and historical development of European NFIs, ii) address the terminology and present GS definitions of NFIs, iii) summarise the current methods of 23 European NFIs including sampling methods, tree measurements, volume models, estimators, uncertainty components, and the use of air- and space-borne data sources, iv) present the recent progress in NFI harmonisation in Europe, and v) provide an outlook under changing climate and forest-based bioeconomy objectives. But simulation modelling approaches often focus too narrowly on calibration against historic reference maps, limiting the diversity of possible outcomes. We argue that, contrary to what is commonly believed, there is no ‘best model’, and that model specification and calibration accuracy depend on the objective of the research. We propose a multi-model ensemble approach, in which a wide range of models and calibration rules sets are systematically tested against multiple metrics. We apply our approach to a case study in Spain. No single model performed well for all statistics, illustrating the danger of cherry-picking statistics for best performance. In our case study, accounting for historic land changes in model design was useful for simulating compact urban development, but limited the variability of simulation outcomes. The accessibility model driver improved urban pattern replication, while suitability without accessibility was useful for simulating low-density development encroaching on natural areas. Rather than abandoning calibrations that show low agreement with reference maps based on a small number of metrics we should seek to understand what each metric is telling us and use this information to enrich the diversity of simulated outcomes.
