[Termes IGN] relief de la surface de la merIndex. décimale : 30.40 Géodésie physique Résumé : (Auteur) The principal role played by the geoid in classical geodesy has been as a datum for levelling. The most obvious level surface of the earth's gravity field that could act as a vertical datum to which all elevations on land may be referred is that "corresponding" to mean sea level (MSL). It has therefore been conventional to define the geoid as that level surface that was the directly observable elevation datum afforded by the mean level of the oceans (more precisely; a coastal estimate). As a corollary, it was assumed that different height systems based on local MSL were related to such a unique geop. This procedure is adequate for geodetic considerations to precisions of 1 part in a million (± 6 m in position). It has, however, long been recognised by physical oceanographers that the MSL surface does not lie along a unique equipotential surface of the earth's gravity field. Direct analogy with the solid earth has resulted in departures of sea level from an equipotential surface being referred to as Sea Surface Topography (SST). The total range of SST is estimated at 3-4 m, with a time varying component approximately one quarter the magnitude of the stationary part. Consequently in aiming at the higher precision of 1 part in 108 (< ± 10 cm in position) a number of factors have to be reassessed. These include the fundamental definitions, the basis and constants of the vertical reference system, the definition, accuracy and limitations of the data available.
In such a reassessment it is apparent that SST is a factor which needs to be taken into account in many respects. It can be treated as a nuisance factor in high precision definitions and determinations of the geoid (or any other vertical reference surface) or as an important parameter to be estimated in support of oceanographic studies. This report will attempt to confront some of the following questions:
(1) How is the geometry of the Molodenskii Boundary Value Problem (BVP) affected by the existence of SST?
(2) Is it possible to formulate in practice, a solution of the free BVP to ± 10 cm precision from surface gravity data that can no longer) be considered refer-enced to a unique vertical datum surface?
(3) With 70% of the earth's surface now "fixed" using satellite altimetry data, are high precision solutions to the BVP from surface gravity data irrelevant?
