Résumé :	(Auteur) Building multiple representations is one of the key problems in GIS. To tackle this problem, we have chosen to connect geographic data from mono-scale representations to build a multiscale database with scale-transition relationships. These scale-transition relationships connect two sets of elements (classes, types or objects) representing the same phenomenon of the real world and carry the sequence of multi-scale operations to navigate from one representation to another. From this concept, a process has been defined to build multi-scale databases, in three steps. The first step is dedicated to the declaration of correspondences and conflicts between input schemata by the means of scale-transition relationships. In the second step, conflicts are resolved and schemata are merged. Finally, the third step corresponds to data matching, with the help of geometric, topologic and semantic information. Scale-transition relationships between objects are created during this last step. To validate the process, a multi-scale database has been produced from two existing mono-scale sets of road network data. The first results of this kernel are satisfactory.

Résumé :	(Auteur) Automating the process of map generalization goes beyond providing a GIS platform with a set of algorithms. It includes understanding the inter-relationships between objects and the informative value of each object. Generalization takes place at the local and global level. In order to have a local view of an area, we describe it by means of a situation that is consulted to choose a local plan (i.e. a set of operators to apply on the objects). Moreover, according to the new data base or map specifications, we utilize the concept of constraints to bound the problem space. These constraints are translations of the required conditions that should take into account not only the objects and but also the final state of the data base. As long as some constraints are violated, the process of generalization must carry on. A situation is described by 1) the geographical objects involved, 2) their relationships and 3) the constraint violations. In order to use a situation as a trigger, it has to be well characterized. Even when situations are well described, the chosen plan may produce undesirable results. In such a case, we need either to try another method or, if the situation is too complex, to try an alternate set of methods and to choose the one which minimizes constraint violations. In order to illustrate these principles two examples are given; one of road generalization and the other of object displacement. They are described, both in terms of data enrichment and process.

Résumé :	(Auteur) Generalizing buildings in dense areas aims at reducing the number of objects while preserving their relative positioning. For this task, operations such as aggregation or typification must be used. The first step to automate this task is the selection of a set of buildings and of the appropriate generalization operator. This firstly requires to automate the extraction of spatial relationships between buildings of a same area. The aim is to isolate the same building clusters as can be visually identified by looking at the map, so that they can be processed together. Analysing and comparing these clusters will provide the necessary information to decide which generalization operation is to be applied on each cluster. This paper presents a method to isolate such clusters. It is based on a criterion of regularity on the distances between neighbour buildings of a same cluster. Because this is not the sole criterion to influence the recognition of a cluster, a method to take other structure types into account will be studied. Information previously computed, such as alignments of buildings along roads, will be used. Finally, a way to store these clusters in the data base will be presented.
