[Vedettes matières IGN] GénéralisationRésumé : (Auteur) Most research efforts on cartographic generalization have focussed on producing a map at a less detailed level than the input map or the input data. Only the final outcome is of interest. In this paper, we study how the changes made to a map during generalization can be visualized such that it looks smooth, that is, without sudden changes. This is necessary for continuous zooming during interactive mapping. We analyze the possibilities and identify various complications that arise. [Termes IGN] triangulation de DelaunayRésumé : (Auteur) Aggregation for spatial objects plays an important role in database or model generalization in GI since reducing spatial complexity is one of the major aims of model generalization. The aggregation operation can be considered as a geometrical operation under the control of semantic and spatial relation of objects. The process of spatial object aggregation is the process of spatial, semantic analyzing, decision-making and the implementation of operation. This process needs not only the geometric and thematic attributes of the objects, but also the spatial and semantic relationship among the objects. It also needs the supporting data structure and analyzing tools in order to make analyzing, decision-making and computation easy in aggregation process. There is still lack of studies on how data structure supports aggregation process and also lack of the method for semantic analysis in aggregation process. This paper is to focus methods and process of spatial aggregation based on semantic and geometric characteristics of spatial objects and relations among the object with the help of spatial data structure (Formal Data Structure), local constrained Delaunay triangulations and semantic hierarchy. The adjacent relation among connected objects an unconnected objects has been studied through constrained triangle as elementary processing unit aggregation operation. The hierarchical semantic analytical matrix is given for analyzing the similarity between object types and between objects (including different levels). It will govern and guide aggregation process. The several different cases of aggregation have been presented in this paper. [Termes IGN] qualitéRésumé : (Auteur) EuroGeographics (formerly CERCO) brings together representatives from the European National Mapping Agencies (NMAs). Its mission is to represent Europe's NMAs and coordinate their efforts to develop the European Geographic Information Infrastructure. It has created several working groups for exchanging information and discussing issues relating to geographical information including the Working Group on Quality. This group is considering three subjects : 'Quality management' and 'ISO 9000', 'Data quality issues and Standards'. The Sub-WorkingGroup on Data Quality (SWG) aims to share experiences in methods used to write dataset specifications, measure quality, assess user requirements and evaluate fitness for use.
The SWG used product life cycle as a basis for further study of other issues relating data quality and to prepare a questionnaire based on diffèrent steps in the product life cycle.
The questionnaire on data quality was prepared in 1999 and received answers from 18 countries, including the USA. This paper is based on the results of the questionnaire.
The questionnaire covered a total of 226 datasets. All NMAs produce topographic datasets and about half also produce cadastral datasets. The questionnaire also covered other datasets produced by the NMAs. The reasons for producing the datasets was divided between legal obligations and market reasons. The user requirements were identified mainly through customer interviews.
The specifications and production of the datasets are discussed. Generally, datasets have a product specification, but there is a clear need for standardization. Graphical maps are still considered to be the main source of datasets. NMAs have defined general criteria for quality of datasets, but detailed criteria will be used in the future. Subcontracting the production appears to be quite common. Nearly 75% of the NMAs subcontract part of their production. Surprisingly, cost is not the major reason cited, but rather the acceleration of production.
Finally, quality evaluation procedures and data quality issues are discussed. The NMAs recognize the geographic standards are being developed, but evidently some education is needed to evaluate quality. Some quality elements and elements are not well known. Assuring customer of data quality appears to be a major issue. However, quality results are not forwarded to customers, which implies that evaluation procedures are not functioning properly. Current attitudes on quality and the need for proper quality specification indicate the possibility that remaining issues will be solved in the future.Numéro de notice : C2001-014 Affiliation des auteurs : COGIT+Ext (1988-2011) Thématique : GEOMATIQUE Nature : Communication DOI : sans En ligne : https://icaci.org/files/documents/ICC_proceedings/ICC2001/icc2001/file/f20008.pd [...] Format de la ressource électronique : URL article Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=64923 Structuring and enriching metadata to enable users' access to geographic information resources / Bénédicte Bucher (2001)

[Termes IGN] utilisateurRésumé : (Auteur) A crucial requirement for the effective exploitation of geographic information is users' access to the knowledge held in corresponding stored resources, i.e. their understanding of what can be derived from available geographic databases and software. At the core of it is the problem of how to share and reuse knowledge, a major current challenge of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The work presented here extends upon lessons learnt in AI. The proposed solution to the users access issue is an expert system that stores geographical knowledge derivation recipes, and that allows users to browse and customise these recipes. Specifically, we build a model representing the recipes components,i.e. geographic application patterns. This model structures metadata about geographic data and metadata about stored processes, and it describes the usage of these data and processes. A prototype of this system, coded in java, is presented in this paper. [Termes IGN] sémiologie graphiqueRésumé : (Auteur) On the 14th and 15th October 2000 in Institute for Cartography of the Dresden University of Technology (Germany) the ICA Commission on Theoretical Cartography held a seminar "The Selected Problems of Theoretical Cartography 2000". It was the first seminar of cartography theorists after the last 19th ICC held in Ottawa. Certainly, it was not a "cartography theorists summit. It was a twoday working seminar where the Commission continued its activities. The program included 12 papers. One can group them into three topics: cartographic semiotics (6 papers), map language and map communication (4), and varia (2). Eight papers are presented in the proceedings. The goals for the seminar were to allow all participants to report on their current theoretical or theoretictechnological research, to activate and to support in particular young scientists, to develop the traditional cooperations between Eastern and Western cartography theoretists. In addition, four doctorate students presented their papers. The next seminar of this type is planned for July 2002 at the Gdansk University (Poland). In the final stage of the preparation of these proceedings I got information from Moscow that the member of our Commission, Prof. Alexander Liouty, unexpectedly passed away. His obituary is included in these proceedings. Note de contenu : Kelnhofer, Fritz
