Then the components of a GIS arc described in the context of practical information requirements A chapter is devoted to the fundamentals of remote sensing, which has become a major GIS data source The procedures and equipment used for data input and output are reviewed, highlighting tradeoffs in the use of competing technologies like scanning and manual digitizing Data quality data manage--ment, and GIS analysis functions are then presented from the perspective of practical methods that are used to generate information products Hinally. the process of GIS implementation is examined addressing such organizational issues as needs analysis, system evaluations, the justification for acquir-ing a GIS. cost-benefit analysis, and the integration ot a GIS into an organization s existing information environment. Political and legal issues in the control of information and the liability for its dissemination often arise in the operation of a GIS. These concerns are clearly addressed with strategies for minimizing the risks to both the producer and user of GIS products The author s practical approach provides comprehensive coverage of the diverse procedures and technologies used in a GIS. The book should appeal to professionals and discipline specialists new to GIS as well as experienced users involved in the management of GIS facilities. Note de contenu : PREFACE
