Furthermore, the method must be able to detect surface discontinuities at the same time. This approach is of paramount importance for determining surfaces of large-scale aerial images of urban areas. The proposed procedure functions within the broader framework of the hierarchical surface reconstruction approach that evolved during the past few years at the Department of Geodetic Science and Surveying. The result of this research is a new implementation of the Graduate Non-Convexity algorithm based on the multigrid techniques. The proposed method is successful in producing a realistic surface representation and a preliminary labeling of its discontinuities. The process of the Graduate Non-Convexity algorithm, as originally proposed by Blake and Zisserman [1987], depends a great deal on the optimal setting of the control parameters. In this work, a specific procedure has been developed that determines the control parameters automatically and less subjectively. Another aspect of the proposed method is the feedback of useful information to the other modules in the hierarchical surface reconstruction system, thereby facilitating the communication between the different levels of the image pyramid. The method chosen was a modified Kalman filter, algorithm used to correct pre-calculated grids of undulations and dynamic topography. Approximations to the transition matrix of the dynamic topography required that a stabilization of the Kalman filter be developed to prevent divergence.
Data used were TOPEX and ERS-1 altimetry, pre-calculated gravimetric geoid undulations and pre-calculated oceanographic dynamic topography. Evaluation of the dynamic topography data showed a consistently incorrect Gulf Stream location, shape and size. To replace this poor data, a synthetic model was generated from ERS-1 altimetry and an oceanographically calculated mean dynamic topography model. The synthetic data showed good Gulf Stream location, shape and size, though with some systematic disagreement with TOPEX/geoid data. The source of this disagreement was not conclusively determined.
Control data were then used to evaluate the stabilization method of the modified Kalman filter. It was shown that divergences due to a poor transition matrix could be eliminated through the new "down-weight" stabilization scheme. Following this, the real data were run through the modified Kalman filter. To estimate the transition matrix for the dynamic topography, a one-layer quasi-geostrophic approximation to the Navier-Stokes' equations was used. Initial runs used varying scale factors for the standard deviations, to help control unrealistic corrections to the a-priori grids. After that, different down-weight factors were investigated for their ability to generate realistic results without divergence.
Results of the modified Kalman filter with stabilization showed that filter stability, with realistic results was obtainable, even with the simplified transition matrix approximation. It was concluded that this method will be useful for future applications of combining existing grids of geoid undulations and dynamic topography which are generally calculated from different sources. In addition, a model of oceanographic dynamic topography was shown conclusively to be an unrealistic model of the actual dynamic topography near the Gulf Stream.Numéro de notice : 12109 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : POSITIONNEMENT Nature : Monographie Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=54538 Réservation

[Termes IGN] TOPEXIndex. décimale : 30.52 Marégraphie et niveau moyen des mers Résumé : (Auteur) A mean sea surface (MSS) grid model on a 1°/16 grid was developed using one year mean sea surface height (SSH) data of the Topex, Geosat and 35-day repeat ERS-1 altimeter satellites. The first cycle data of 168-day repeat ERS-1 were also included. The MSS data represent average heights of the ocean surface above the Topex/Poseidon reference ellipsoid during Topex repeat cycles 17 through 53.
The one year mean SSH data of each satellite were computed by time-averaging SSH values of all available cycles at fixed points on the reference track. The inverted barometer (IB) correction had been applied to all SSH data before they were reduced to reference tracks correcting for the geoid gradients. The ocean tide correction of the Topex SSH data used in this study had been improved over the Cartwright and Ray 1990 model in a preliminary analysis which estimated residual signals of four major ocean tide constituents along with additional modeling of the annual and semiannual variations and the global secular SSH change. As a by-product of this preliminary data analysis, a sea level rise rate of 2.3 mm/yr. was obtained from Topex SSH data for cycles 4 through 58 after correcting for the drift rate of Topex altimeter. A gridding method of the least squares collocation was used with a covariance function based on the second-order Markov process.
Global test comparisons of several recently developed MSS grid models showed that the MSS model determined in this study had the best agreement with the SSH and along-track SSH gradient data of Topex, Geosat and ERS-1 satellites. The MSS grid model determined in this study, however, contains the artifact of cross-track gradients which show the visual pattern of satellite ground tracks in regions with strong ocean variability. The artificial cross-track gradients of this MSS model can create errors of about 0.2 - 0.3 cm of MSS gradient correction for the ocean-wide Topex data. Another version of the MSS model corresponding to the SSH data without the IB correction was also produced but it was found that the MSS model with the IB correction is preferred.Numéro de notice : 12107 Affiliation des auteurs : non IGN Thématique : POSITIONNEMENT Nature : Monographie Permalink : https://documentation.ensg.eu/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=54536 Réservation
