It is assumed that the vertical deflec-tion vector is homogeneously and isotropically distributed, its covariance matrix has G.I. TAYLOR - T. KARMAN structure. The model is consistent with the statistics of gravity and height anomalies via the fundamental equations of physical geodesy. The spectrum of auto- and crosscorrelations for a flat earth model is given. Because of the continuous spectrum a reproducing kernel does not exist. Our model is tested relative to the unvariate KOLMOGOROV-WIENER concept of S. Heitz. An earlier described computational method (Groten and Rummel, 1974) was applied in combining satellite potential coefficients sets with surface gravity data. Coefficients as given by SAO, Rapp and GSFC were used in combination with improved surface mate-rial. Numerical effects in evaluating linear Molodensky's corrections were investigated and corresponding discrepancies are shown. In this connection the formulas given by Pellinen, Moritz, Arnold, Molodensky and an additional correc-tion formula were applied to 6' by 101 blocks. The differences between guasigeoid heights and geoid undulations were considered for the same block size. The effect of atmospheric corrections to surface gravity observations was taken into account; results are presented for mean values of the above mentioned block size. The effect of isostatic corrections was computed and numerical results are given for neighborhood and distant zones. A very detailed geoid (20 cm-isolines) is given for Northern Germany in order to visualize the smoothness of geoid undulations in that area even in a detailed figure. All geoids are related to the 1967 IUGG-normal gravity formula where, however, the N -term as recently discussed by Rapp was taken into account. In the last part, results of linear autoregression prediction for geoid undula-tions are given. For comparison, similar results as found by using the global data of the GSFC-geoid are presented. [Termes IGN] champ de pesanteur terrestreIndex. décimale : 30.40 Géodésie physique Résumé : (Auteur) The vertical sounding concept consists on the measuring of the vertical component of the gravity vector by observing the free-fall motion along the trajectory near to the plumb line direction. Two possible applications of this method are considered : determination of the GM constant and the local improvement of the gravity field. With the present accuracy of the geopotential the GM can be determined from the motion above 7000km, without harmful influence of unknown gravity forces. Local improvement of the gravity field is reduced to the downward continuation problem, which is solved by collocation method. It is proved that gravity anoma-lies on the earth surface can be determined from gravity disturbances measured in space with transformation error below 1 mgl, assuming that the covariance function is known.
