A comparison between both stations shows that the measured earth tide parameters depend on the local geological structure. The amplitude factors of the partial tide M2 obtained from the pearl gneiss at the station Wettzell are lower by about 18 % in N-S-direction and 4 % in E-W-direction than those derived from the softer clay anhydrite mixture at Berchtesgaden. For both stations stable preferential directions of the long - term drift can be given, namely north - west in Berchtesgaden and towards south - east in Wettzell. They are consistent with the direction obtained from tectonic model computations and with the direction of the Central European stress field. The long - term drift rate of Wettzell amounts to about 40 % of that of Berchtesgaden. This decline is not so much a function of the transmission of tectonic pressure from south to north, as rather the result of a different response of the stations substracts to this tectonic process. A short discussion of the geometrical and meteorological conditions to be considered in planning the observations is followed by descriptions of the flashlight beacons and the observation equipment as well as of the mobile balloon launching station and the four observing stations. Subsequently, an outline of the practical course of balloon launchings and observations is given, with a listing of the necessary logistic and organizational preparations included. The paper closes with a short summary of the observations achieved. [analyse of the results] This paper describes the evaluation of observations performed within a stellar triangulation experiment using balloon sondes, the objective of which was to derive the spatial directions of three baselines of between 160 and 180 km in length. The accuracies achieved are in the order of 0,5" to 1,5" and do not meet expectations; the main error source is considered to be the modelling of the refraction at the high zenith distances coming up to 80°. The results are compared with those of a dedicated Doppler campaign and with those derived from the adjustment of the European Triangulation Network (RETrig).
